We Need Hitters

Hall-of-Fame baseball announcer, Ernie Harwell of the Detroit Tigers, was also a master at telling stories on the air.  One of my favorites was about Minnesota Twins’ Manager, Sam Mele.  The Twins had one of the worst hitting teams in the Major Leagues for many years.  One of the Twins’ best scouts, Del Wilber, found what he considered to be one of the best pitchers he had ever seen pitch and hid the kid in a hotel room while he phoned Mele.  When Sam answered the phone, an excited Wilber blurted out, “I have a pitcher you need to sign right away,” gasped Wilber.  “I just saw him pitch the best game I have ever seen, and he struck-out 27 straight batters in nine innings.  Only one batter fouled off a pitch,” screamed Wilber.  There was a pause, and Mele responded, “Sign the guy who got the foul, we need hitters.”
