They’re Calling for You

Head Coach, George Halas, of the Chicago Bears could be a real tough guy to deal with on occasion.  By 1952, after playing four years without a raise, Bears’ quarterback and placekicker George Blanda had all but decided to leave the Chicago Bears for the Canadian Football League,   Halas would finally relent to give Blanda a raise to $11,600 a year.  Blanda had spent so much time on the bench, his teammates called him “The Judge.”  Blanda would occasionally play linebacker for Chicago, but became the starting quarterback in 1953 and filled the Chicago air with footballs.  The results were less than acceptable, as the Bears finished that season with a 3-8-1 record.  Halas and Blanda always seemed at odds with one another.  “He was too cheap to even buy me a kicking shoe,” exclaimed Blanda.  Once when the Bears were getting beat badly in the second half of a game, the crowd started to chant, “We want Blanda.  We want Blanda.”  Halas looked back at the bench and hollered, “Blanda.”  George jumped up and ran over to his coach, while putting on his head gear.  Halas pointed towards the stands and said, “Get on up there.  They’re calling for you.”

You have talked about the history of American sports which is not known to people living at present time. I heard the name of this player George but know anything about him before reading your article. It is really a great article to read and the information which you have shared is really worth reading it.
