Who You Guys Waiting For
I will never forget meeting Hall-of-Fame pitcher Warren Spahn in Houston, Texas, at a baseball card and memorabilia show. He was late as usual and most of the folks standing in line with me for his autograph were becoming agitated. One older gentleman in front of me was pacing back and forth and beginning to grumble about the wait. It was at this time that the people in the convention center started to point and clap as he moved through the crowd like a king. Finally Warren Spahn had showed up. As he saw the folks in the autograph line waiting for him, he happened to walk right by the older fellow, who was not so happy to see him. Spahn passed by, now realizing he was late and said in jest to the old man, “Who you guys waiting for?” This older fellow looked him directly in the eyes and answered without a smile, “Cy Young.” Everyone started laughing including Spahn, who now apologized profusely. Cy Young, the winningest pitcher in Major League history, had died many years ago. I guess the old man thought that waiting for Spahn was like waiting for the dead.
