How's His Stuff

How’s His Stuff
There is a terrific story on the back of Virgil Trucks’ 1955 Bowman baseball card.  Virgil Trucks, a starting pitcher for the Detroit tigers, was on the mound at Fenway Park, against the Boston Red Sox.  The lead-off hitter for the Red Sox, Johnny Pesky, hit the first pitch for a single and ended up on first base.  The next hitter, Bobby Doerr, also singled on the first pitch and moved Pesky to second.  Up next was Ted Williams, who doubled off the wall on the first pitch he saw, scoring Pesky and moving Doerr to third.  So far, all three pitches that Trucks has thrown have been put in play as a hit and the score is 1-0 in favor of the Red Sox.  Tigers’ Manager Steve O’Neil called time and went to the mound.  O’Neil asked his catcher Bob Swift, “Does Trucks have anything today?”  Swift’s response, “Heck, I don’t know.  I haven’t caught one yet.”
